Inertia

Someday I'd like to write a whole series of songs using concepts from physics as metaphors.

They didn't talk about it
They didn't think it through
He went and popped the question
She went and said "I do"
Now that they've got the mortgage
Now that they had the kid
Now that it's too late, they wonder
Just what the hell they did

And why they didn't stop to find a better way
They got caught up in tradition
They got carried away

But nothing's gonna stop till you say stop
Standing still is losing ground
Inertia makes the world go round

He could have been his own boss
He should have looked around
But for the sake of steady money
Took the first job that he found
It only took a couple hours
To see he'd made a big mistake
But give a man security
And see just how much shit he'll take

Say why he didn't stop to find a better way
Too little time to try it
Too many bills to pay

But nothing's gonna stop till you say stop
Standing still is losing ground
Inertia makes the world go round

She always thinks about it
She's never understood
But she takes him at his word
When he tells her she's no good
She always tries to please him
He's never satisfied
He leaves her bruised and bloody
She comes apart inside

Say why she didn't stop to find a better way
Love has always hurt her
And where else would she stay?

But nothing's gonna stop till you say stop
Standing still is losing ground
Inertia makes the world go round
